The center for Applied Statistics Science in RenMin university of China was established in 1988, the predecessor of the Institute of Statistical Science.
there are now 29 full-time and part-time research fellows working in CAS, and a few chinese statisticians, such as chen xiru, yan jiaan, both the academicians of the chinese academy of science, and zhang yaoting, yuan wei, geng zhi, zhao yanyun and he keng. the strong research team, the plentiful research fruit and the high research reputation have made cas the first rank in china and well known to the world.
the statistics major in ruc was first set up in 1950, and the statistics department in ruc was founded in 1952, which is the earliest in china. at the beginning, the statistics major of ruc followed the pattern of soviet leninist theories combined with the practical situation of china. later, the system of social economic statistics under socialistic planned economy conditions was set up and soon spread to colleges specialized in finance and economics. it had a great influence over china at that time. after the reform and opening, the statistics department of ruc enrolled the first batch of master students of statistics in 1979, and in 1981, the academic degree committee of state council sanctioned the statistics department of ruc to be one of the first batch to confer master and doctor degree.
since the midst of 1980s, the statistics department of ruc chose the descriptive statistics, probability theory, mathematic statistics, etc. as the basic major courses, which are in line with the international way. and in the direction of national economics statistics and macroeconomics analysis, based on the national accounting course, we carried out many research projects and were awarded many prices.
in 1990s, the statistics department of ruc developed very quickly. one progress is that we explored a new major direction-”risk management and actuary”. in the major direction, we enrolled undergraduate in 1993, postgraduate for master in 1994, postgraduate for doctor in 1996, and set up postdoctoral flexible station on applied economics in 1996. in addition, the ministry of education sanction the statistics department of ruc to confer master degree of “probability theory and mathematic statistics” in 1998.
cas was based on the statistics department of ruc and her predecessor is the research institute on statistics science of ruc, which was set up in 1988. for many years, we have been keeping a vigilant eye on the new development on applied statistics. and little by little, we finally formed three special research directions: economic and social statistics, census and data analysis, risk management and actuarial science. in 2000,we reorganized cas and now our research capability on applied statistics are in lead in the whole country.
